Heritage Food Conservation
Welcome to Omega Blue Farms Holiday Turkeys. We are pleased to announce that we will have both Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys again this year. These fabulous heritage birds, our Kwalicum Bronze and Holland Whites are hand raised by us on our 10 acre farm near Spider Lake. We have their feed custom milled here on Vancouver Island with no GMO's, corn or soy added. Their comfortable roosting house sits on the edge of their own pastured forest. Here they enjoy a life of fresh air, streams and foraging in freedom throughout the woods and sunny glens.
They will range in size from approx. 12 to 20lbs and can be picked up at one of the Farmer's Markets we attend or here at the farm. To get a farm fresh Omega Blue turkey for your family this holiday, place your order today while supply lasts. A $25 deposit will hold your bird for you. And please let us know the size range you would prefer.
Our Mission:
Omega Blue Farms is a heritage animal and heirloom plant conservation farm. The animal and plant varieties we utilize are maintained, restored, and improved using traditional breeding and morganic practices.
Unlike the food found in the grocery store, the heritage foods we offer are grown from publicly (Canadian) owned genetics. By buying Omega Blue, you are supporting your own Food Independence.
Wayne & Dawn
About Us:
Omega Blue Farms was started in 2004 by myself (Wayne) and Dawn Osborne when we moved to the Spider Lake area after buying a raw 10 acre lot. Our property was previously mined for gravel, sand, and peat but came with a southern exposure, sandy soil, and an abundance of spring fed water. To protect our long term farming aspirations, we had our rural residential property added to the Agricultural Land Reserve and quickly obtained Farm Status.
Our farming venture started as a poultry breeding operation where have been restoring Ameraucanas, Muscovy ducks, and Bronze turkeys right from the start. Excellent drainage and ample spring water running through each pen has helped these breeds thrive and become recognized as amongst the best examples of their breeds available. Our sandy soil started out lacking any organic substance, but has been slowly improved by naturally pasturing the poultry.
With the soil improving, Dawn and I started moving towards developing a garden in 2008 when we terraced the slope between the homesite and the poultry runs. It was time to start focussing some of our genetics expertise on heirloom vegetable conservation. By 2010, we started our seedline whichwas extremely well received. We look forward to a future where Omega Blue Farms matures into a good old fashioned mixed farm, supporting the sustainable conservation of our heritage food supply.
